How We Got Started
It is a tradition in the Kladar family that their 5 children do not receive gifts from their friends on their birthdays. Instead, they use their own God-given gifts of ambition, intelligence, creativity, imagination, and compassion to give back to the world.
In 2008, the 3 oldest kids decided to create their own charity! It first started after visiting a poor medical clinic in a rural part of Mexico where they learned of children their own ages in desperate need of life-saving heart surgery. The kids then went to work, figuring out what they could do to help. Sarah, age 10 at the time, came up with the name "Kids Helping Kids Fix Broken Hearts". Emily, age 8, used her artistic ability and creativity and designed a logo. Along the way, they decided to print the logo onto dishtowels and have been selling them for $5. Since August of 2008, approximately 6,000 dishtowels have been sold and approximately $70,000 has been raised to help more than 29 children from 10 states!! There is at least one dishtowel in all 50 states and now in 33 countries!
The charity has now been expanded to help families throughout the United States.
In 2009, we partnered with Sacred Heart Children's Hospital's Foundation so we can help kids through the Northwest. In 2011, we partnered with St. Louis Children's Hospital to help children throughout the Midwest. Also in 2011, we partnered with Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, TX.
The money raised will pay for travel, food and lodging expenses for the parents of children needing heart surgery away from their hometown. We also pay for other expenses related to the surgery not covered by insurance.
We have now helped families from WA, ID, MT, OK, TX, NC, SD, NE, MO and IL. We have paid for lodging at Ronald McDonald houses at St. Louis Children's Hospital and Texas Children's Hospital while families are awaiting heart transplants for their kids. We have also provided gas cards so parents can drive back and forth to be with their hospitalized children. We were finally able to help a family from our own hometown of Coeur d'Alene, ID by paying for lodging that they could no longer afford, as well as provide help with gas and food while their child is in the hospital. Our goal is to help at least one child from each of the 50 states.
The Kladar kids sell their dishtowels at churches, schools and community events. If you would like to have the Kladar kids speak at your church, school or event, please contact us.
Dishtowels have also been sold by children in Minnesota and Texas. If your child would like to sell dishtowels to help us raise money, we'd love to discuss this with you.
